PSS Politics or What (Sequel)

Saipan Tribune reports today that there are three applicants for the Public School System Commissioner position. Earlier we had a post on this, and yes, former PSS associate commissioner Rita Sablan is one of the three that has turned in her application. Again, Sablan competed with retired PSS Commissioner David M. Borja and lost by one vote during the BOE election two years ago. Sablan filed a lawsuit against the decision at that time.

Ambrose Bennett and Debra Ellen are the other applicants as of today.

Well, do we now know who will be the next PSS commissioner? Any idea?

Read on our earlier post regarding this issue.

PSS Politics or What?

In the Marianas Variety today, the report announced that Education Commissioner David M. Borja finally gave in and declared retirement from post due to ultimatum from the Board of Education.

Present...Lucy Blanco-Maratita now chairs the Board
Past....Roman C. Benavente chaired last school year
Present/Past...Herman T. Guerrero, still a board member, now BOE Vice-Chair
Present...Mary Lou Ada now a member of the board with Galvin Deleon Guerrero

Past...two of the board members then wanted former associate commissioner Rita Sablan to be the Commissioner and not Borja, however, Benavente and three other board members (Marja Lee Taitano and Dino Jones) voted "yes" for Borja.

During the election according to Saipan Tribune, Maratita expressed disappointment with the process. She and Guerrero voted for Sablan. Borja became the Commissioner. Rita Sablan filed law suit against PSS. Procedures were questioned so as Borja's education background. The law suit remains in the court.

Now, Benavente is out, Maratita is the BOE chair while Guerrero is the vice-chair. Borja suddenly was given the option to retire or else would be fired from post. Marianas Variety said the reason why the Board wanted Borja out was due to loss of confidence in him to run the PSS.

Principals wept. Farewell ceremonies were given to Borja.

Now, my question is, does this mean Sablan will be back to fill the post?

The Buzz: Who's to Blame?

Didn't mean to bring this up but people have come up to me asking me questions I have no and have not gotten any answer. This is with regard to the death of the Tinian high school student three weeks ago. The kid died inside the school right after his PE class. He was interred last Friday.

Questions of these people now:

1. Should PSS be liable to this loss since it happened within the school premises. Should the PE teacher be blamed for this?
2. Shouldn't schools or at least administrators be aware of the health status or condition of their students?
3. Don't school have surveys before school opens?

These are just some of the community's inquisitions.

School in October?

Whoa! Hold on! The Public School System, which follows the federal education standards will start the next school year in October and not in August? That's the decision that PSS and Board of Education officials decided if the current government proceeded with their budget cuts to PSS.

I guess students, as we were young before, would initially be happy that their vacation is going to be extended; however, they wouldn't realize what they'd be missing in the end. The public schools here really need more attention in education. According to studies before (reports from NMC) that the CNMI, though English is the major language or at least the official one, students are "bad" speakers and writers of the language. This didn't come from me, ok. It was NMC's report before.

Poor teachers. Some are from off island, who wanted an adventure in the Pacific. Now, they're up for a huge one, i guess.... Two months without pay? How are they going to pay their rent with that cut? Would their landlords allow them to skip payment for two months? Would the government include them to avail food stamps? If I were a teacher, would I remain on this island?

God forbid.

PSS' 10-minute exercise

The Public School System is mixed with the implementation of the wellness program in all 20 public schools. Why? It's because the Board of Education approved at least 40 minutes of exercise that is spread to each class.

The Education Board approved this to promote wellness and prevent onset of diabetes with the children in the CNMI.

Problem is with the secondary schools. This is how the secondary schools might be doing, each class will be allotting minimum of 10 minutes of exercise or physical fitness routine, meaning even the science class would have to allot minimum of physical education and get those idle high school butts up and move to remove some fats and be healthier.

I guess PE classes are not enough to lose those fats or there's not enough PE classes and PE teachers in the public schools? Parents what are we doing to promote wellness at your own home?
