Eye on the Trial: Villagomez et. al. Flown Away...

While the news does not reveal the source of its report that convicted former Lt. Gov. and his sister and brother-in-law have been flown to a federal prison in the US. The islands are saddened about this news. The islands, where family matters most are grieving yet trying to believe that all this mayhem might have just confirmed that justice can still prevail in this world.

Six and Seven. These are the numbers our fellow islanders will be holding on in the years to come....

Justice was done: that's what matters most to the "Islanders."

There will be political backlash for those who supported the sentencing of these three - regardless of what they did. This is the island way and and islanders stick together.

Fitial will win the next election and those hoping to have jobs with Heinz will wander the streets of Garapan in a daze wondering what went wrong.

Fitial can't win. 50 percent plus 1 is now law. Anyone voting for Fitial is doing so for their jobs and that is all. Fitial will lose and then retire under the Willie Tan pension he worked so hard for.

Fitial is a sick man in health and faith. This pig went to Antonio V. Deleon Guerrero funeral knowing full well he was the onw who wanted him fired because Tony wouldn't be Ben's lapdog. He went to the funeral and hugged the family hoping to get votes. At least Charles Cepeda the uneducated BOR Chairman didn't attend. Charlie Boy fired Tony under Ben's orders. Maybe Charlie Boy should take some part-time courses at NMC and at least get an AA.

I dunno SMR, I don't see too many 'islanders' grieving over this. Hell, my neighbors woke me up at 5:30 AM with their whoops and cheers at the news.

This is the best thing that's happened here in a long time. Let's hope the feds bag a few more corrupt big shots.

Don't forget that it was the Fitial Administration that referred the OPA tip to the FBI.

The kangaroos are jumping for joy. After all it was their court that did the convicting. To find some real corruption take a close look at Munson and how he was bribed to slam dunk this trumped up case as advance warning that the Feds are in charge here. Their money and their guns rule here. Self rule is a pitiful joke played once more on the hapless local population. Looks like we would learn after 400 years.

You blame Munson for being coerced to hand down this punishment? I blame Munson for not being tough enough. There were whole families suffering while these three reaped the rewards of this illegal act. I hope they realize that they can do more good behind bars. Let them help educate those who were not as privileged as them, such as helping inmates obtain a degree while in prison. The more good they do inside will ensure them a shorter sentence. Forget the appeals. It's now up to them to make sure that their time spent there will be productive.

It was a jury of 12 locals, not Judge Munson, that convicted them. That is the definition of self rule.

And the sentences were fully within the parameters of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines.

Justice was done.

Thank you informant, witnesses, OPA, OAG, FBI, USAO, judge, and jurors!

The feds should have put more resources into this place years ago instead of indulging in Congressional politically motivated social engineering through the minimum wage and immigration take-over fiasco.

First things first!

"Don't forget it was the Fitial Administration that referred the OPA tip to the FBI".....only after Tim jumped ship.....you should add.
You don't want to play in Ben's sandbox? Then you are out of the sandbox.
I swear to god, living on this island is like living on a reservation in Arizona....tribal politics, family tribal politics, drunk vindictive uncles. Only thing missing is good frybread.
Well, the chicken keleguen in corn tortillas is ok......

If you don't like it, then get the fuck out of this island.

"If you don't like it get the fuck out of this island." I love Ray Mafnas quotes!

Enjoy your new digs CONVICTS! I think I'll stay on "your island" for as long as I like, and you will do nothing about it.

Hope the three love their new prison cells, courtesy of GREED. Let's all pray Ben The Big Stinky Finky joins them soon.

The OAG referred the Rydlyme case to the FBI long before Timothy P. Villagomez withdrew his loyalty to the Covenant Party. Enforcement of the law by the USAO and OAG is a matter of professionalism and adherence to the rule of law -- not politics.

Thank God that commitment to doing the right thing is as equally shared by the people of the CNMI -- tipsters, witnesses, government workers, jurors, and voters.

Let it BE!

What a bunch of BS. OPA referred and worked the case with the FBI.

Please put Ben Tan in prison next to Jack Abramoff.

Anonymous said...

You must mean the Jack Abramoff that got 4 years for taking Hundreds of Millions delivering nada. Compared with 7 years for a deal worth 300K in which all the product was duly delivered to the buyer?

"And the sentences were fully within the parameters of the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines." Sure they were. What absolute BS. The Villagomez/Santos sentences are wildly out of scale for the offenses committed.

This is W teaching the B not to get too far out of line.

Criminal Defense Lawyer said...

OPA told the OAG. The OAG told the FBI. Of course, thereafter FBI Special Agents worked the case with OPA investigators, but the OAG role was critical.

Check out the USAO press release upon the arrest of Timothy P. Villagomez, where U.S. Attorney Leonardo M. Rapadas gave due credit to the OAG.

Note also that two of four Saipan-resident AUSAs are CNMI OAG alumni (and one USAO alumnus was hired by the OAG as an AAG).

Enforcing the law is not a partisan endeavor. Working together brings synergies.

Abramoff delivered what he was paid to deliver, for as long as he was paid to deliver it. If he could have worked the WTO the way he worked DC he'd still be delivering and getting paid.

It's a stretch to compare Abramoff and Villagomez, in that the former was paid to to compromise 'the system' such that a select few benefitted, the latter was paid to ensure that 'the system' worked to the greatest benefit of 'the people'.

It's arguable that Abramoff's efforts actually provided some benefit to many aspects of the general quality of life on Saipan, whereas Timmy V.'s actions were intended for, and resulted in, purely personal benefit at great cost to the people he was supposed to be looking out for.

Criminal Defender above is correct. The OAG-Fed tandem has earned a couple of nice feathers it its cap the past year or two. Let's wish them happy hunting, as the field is so fertile.

The author of this post said " The islands are saddened about this news."

Are you being satirical or are you smoking crack?

I live here and EVERY person I heard mention this case thought he diserved more time. I have not heard one person saddened and the only few who defending him were pathetic vote garnering politicians. I thought the sentence was fair and appropriate because 87 months is a long time.

The person who got shafted was Ms. Santos because her husband and brother were so weak and spineless that they let her take this fall with them.

Anonymous said...

Oh, come on teacher... Ms. Santos was in there like a dirty shirt into the laundry...two times!!!
Did you observe her arrogant looks at the media and KSPN cameras? All that was missing was her giving the one finger digital salute. She paid Lujan $1500/hour to stop her from doing that.

Criminal Defense Lawyer said...

Actually, Lujan was Tim's lawyer, not hers. But otherwise your point is well taken.

Kinai was not some innocent virgin with no knowledge of where all this money was coming from. As the jury correctly found, she was in it up to her eyeballs.

Do the crime, serve the time. Gender is not exculpatory.
