A Tragedy Before the Runoff...

Yes folks. This is not one of those movie scenes where you can just wake up in the morning and the massacre you saw on TV or theater didn't actually occur.

We pray for the victims...
"A man shot and killed four individuals before turning the gun on himself in two separate shootings in Marpi and Kannat Tabla.Details of the shootings are still sketchy. In the Kannat Tabla shooting, the fatalities were two men in their late 20s and early 30s, both local residents, and two children under 10 years old. The two adult victims sustained gunshot wounds in the head, and police are saying they were shot at close range. The shooter then proceeded to Last Command Post and shot a group of mostly Korean tourists, wounding eight. The victims included two Korean children. He then went to Banzai Cliff where he shot himself."

Follow the story on Saipan Tribune.
CNN iReport also published the story....this story puts Saipan back in the map...

This sad that the HA team is capitalizing on this very tragic news! Please people, this is not Governor Fitial's fault! The commenter above is obviously a HA camper!

Only a sick person would seek to politicize such a terrible human tragedy.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 21, 2009

“SAIPAN FOR PEACE CANDLELIGHT VIGIL” TO BE HELD AT AMERICAN MEMORIAL PARK

Saipan—A coalition of faith-based and community groups has organized an event to promote peace, in response to the violence from yesterday’s senseless tragedy affecting all peoples in the Marianas.

Members of the community are invited and urged to attend the “Saipan For Peace Candlelight Vigil” for the victims of the horrific shootings.

This event will be held this Sunday at 6PM at American Memorial Park. It is an ecumenical and multi-cultural event and all are welcomed and invited. This needed event is non-political and spiritual leaders of all religions have been invited to speak.

The healing begins as soon as possible for as many as possible. Join us to denounce this violence coming to our paradise. Evil has no border, but together, as a movement of “one voice, one people,” we can affirm that it is not welcome here.

Please join all of Saipan as we hold the victims, their families, and our community in thoughts and prayers.

A candle light vigil is political? Shame on you CNMI for not giving the victims the respect they deserve.

noni 8:06 - now i know that just because you can read and write don't mean that you can comprehend. where did you get the idea that this candle light vigil is political? Geez!

Ambrose Bennett said...

Common sense dictates that the press release would have been much better had you replaced “one voice, one people,” with “one people, one direction.”

I can't believe it said...

That can't have been Ambrose Bennett. He only wrote one sentence.

Unknown said...

The community's movement has a "voice" that is in unison against violence.

In the coming days, we can all discern the direction toward that message.

As for those who cry "political," not so. While the estimated 600 attendees included Governor Fitial, Reps. Palacios, R. Torres, Sablan, and Santos (perhaps even more, apologies if overlooked), no elected officials spoke. Both gubernatorial campaigns were invited with numerous levels of outreach and were publicly acknowledged during the welcoming remarks of the event.

Their attendance was appreciated and respected. However, by their presence, all who attended honored those taken from us and the survivors.

People wishing to know more about who organized can know that it was agreed that no organizations or church would have billing as nearly every faith family on Saipan was contacted and any spiritual leader was welcomed to speak-- Protestant, Muslim, Bahai'i, Jewish, Catholic, and so forth.

And all the MVA could do was issue a statement about how this will dampen tourist numbers. How selfish and embarrassing.

Unknown said...

Not slighting MVA, let them focus on what they want. It will be the people coming together, welcoming visitors to a safe and peaceful island that will make the most difference in the coming months.

I heard someone say that we should send them off at the airport. That is a warm idea, but perhaps an even bolder idea is going to the town of Masan in Korea and bringing the Marianas to them.

The man with the spinal injury was on Day 2 of his first trip abroad... clearly MVA must bring that man and his family back and give him the Day 3 and on that he deserved.

With or without the gathering, was there ever any doubt that the people of Saipan oppose mass murder?

To prevent it from happening again, we will need to examine what caused Mr. Li to snap.

Anonymous said...

The vigil was a wonderful event that started the healing process for everyone present. Thank you to the organizers. God bless the CNMI and victims of this tragedy.

Anonymous said...

I would agree with 'Jay' that MVA should not be in the 'faith based' community healing business.

What a great idea for them to send emissary(s) there to show our island's concern and to provide a complementary return trip if he wants it. Listening?

As for those 500, or however many attended, hearing a unified "voice" of action that somehow extends to everyone else that lives here; I'll wait and see just what 'direction' that turns out to be before climbing on that bus.

Dear SMR,

Is your next post going to be " A Tragedy After the Runoff" or will you go with something less somber, as in, "Saipan is the place to BE" or something to that effect?

Anonymous said...

Saipan is not the place to be for the next 5 years....even Chuckie is leaving. Goodbye Saipan.

Anonymous said...

You get what you ask for right? CNMI really asked for it. Now bend over and take it like the backward community you are.

Anonymous said...

THE MORE OF YOU LEAVE, THE BETTER FOR THE CNMI!

WE DON'T NEED ANY OF YOU FUCKHEADS ON OR ISLAND.

Anonymous said...

Federalization: You asked for it; you got it.

We'll probably hit bottom in about three years.

Anonymous said...

THEN STOP TAKING OUR MONEY WELFARE LOSERS!

Anonymous said...

With Fitial's win it now correct to say that we had a shooting before the Tragedy?

Anonymous said...

Too bad the judge didn't dismiss Fitial's stupid lawsuit a couple of days ago.

Anonymous said...

As our 7th Governor (Teno was both 2nd and 5th), Fitial certainly has more than his share of good luck.

Given all the challenges and obstacles the CNMI will face in the next five years, we will need it!

I hope the FBI investigation into the mass murder goes well.

Sales will undoubtedly plummet, despite the best efforts of Saipan's most outspoken Lite Beer salesman and MHS-based realtor.

Hard cheese, old chaps. No new job for you, late-coming Angelo, or Bitter Ed.

It's all the fault of the deluded sheep. They do not recognize my brilliance, like my mother and wife/girlfriend do. HAHAHAHA!

The Fitialites MUST have cheated. Or the voters aren't as smart as us. Or both.

Call out the United Nations, Hillary Clinton, or Jim Benedetto.

With Allen P. Stayman to stamp his feet and David Barrett Cohen to enslave the NMDs now that he's freed the downtrodden indentured servants.

What else could cause one of Saipan's finest heroes to snap?

Everything is always BenTan's fault. Workers of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your chains.

Recall Fitial.

Revolt.

You are not a labor unit but a potential citizen!

Sign the Petition.

Status now.

Don't renew the contract of Howard Penney Willens. Instead, declare him Persona Non Grata while the Republicans still control the Legislature.

That will show them!

Zaldy Dandan or Gemma Casas for PIO.

about the shooter:

There is word going around that this guy was high on ice or in serious withdrawal at the time of the rampage. He was at the upper limit of meth fueled paranoia, someone maybe took advantage of him with looming federalization. Bought Ice from him on an advance- use now/pay later scheme. He grew impatient, frustrated that no cash was being paid. Users/customers probably thought that the FEDS will get rid of him before they had to pay him for the drugs they used. How has business been for the shooting range? Better than BING BENG BANG?

I heard that the shooter was a black ops recruit from the CIA sent here to drive the last nail in the economic coffin so the feds could have a free and easy time taking this place back to the 60s.

There were actually two of them and they set up the killings, then one turned on the other and killed him leaving the notes and his body as "evidence" that he acted alone as a lunatic rampage murderer trying to kill tourists.

Next case.

Anonymous said...

So the CIA black ops repeled down banzai cliff to a semi-submersible vehicle below and sped away? Leaving the Li as the lone gunman?

Anonymous said...

Sounds real..Could it be possible? Maybe Bitter Ed is actually the CIA Dude?

The unitive function of marriage is a tremendous blessing when lived in the context for which it was created.

As prayed thousands of times daily with respect to a different sacrament, “Let it not bring me condemnation, but health in mind and body.”

God's rules were not established to deprive us of anything, but to bestow on us True freedom, and liberation from the slavery to sin.

It is unfortunate that our early life experiences can have crippled our spiritual growth, but God never gives us an obstacle but that He does not provide means to evercome it.

Let us pray for Smart Glen!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF GUNS IN THE CNMI

Diego Benavente was the author of Public Law 7-38, which legalized .223 caliber rifles back in 1991.

Thomas P. Villagomez was the author of Public Law 8-5, which allowed for the licensing of shooting galleries, in 1992.

Ray Tebuteb was the author of Public Law 14-69, which allowed .223 caliber rifles in shooting galleries, because "they are more widely used." This law was enacted in 2005.

In the 16th legislature:

Ray Palacios has proposed to promote shooting resorts in House Bil 16-31 and allow ammunition of ANY caliber.

Ray Tebuteb has proposed to allow DPS to sell firearms out of their armory in House Bill 16-230 to generate revenue.

STOP THE MADNESS!

Any idea when they are going to deport the overstaying Carolinians?

"The immigration of Carolinians to Saipan began in the early 1800s, after the Spanish reduced the local population of Chamorro natives to just 3,700. They began to immigrate mostly sailing from small canoes from other islands, which a typhoon previously devastated. The Carolinians have a much darker complexion than the native Chamorros."
