Reading the news about the Island Medical Clinic and its plight made me realize I have several instances that I could share about an employee fleeing the "crime scene" in the CNMI. The certain employee Mr. Dolot immediately flew back to his home country, my guess would be the Philippines, just when the alleged scam was dug up by the Public Health. Its owner based on news said he was dubious when this employee bought a $15,000 car and wondered where he got the dough to purchase such expensive car for a non-resident worker.
This made me realize that I have known some non-resident workers that fled from the island for similar reasons. I know one employee of Century Hotel got away with alleged over $20,000 cash with him. The company didn't pursue but reported the case. I just found out another acquaintance that I used to bowl with also flew back home for the same reason. However, I heard he got more money from his company than the other.
Then I remember I was taking a friend to the airport and I saw someone I knew (close to a paper editor before) and she dashed from the cab with her backpack to the check in counter at the airport. I wondered why she was in a hurry. I wanted to say goodbye but a friend who was close to her said it was not a good idea. I didn't ask further why.
I found out that the woman left the island without consent from her employer. Again, why? I learned that the woman had to flee due to a case involving her colleague at work. I heard that her colleague stole covertly money from the company and she got afraid that she was going to be implicated with the case. Thus, she ran away.
Of course, the biggest case is the one that involved a MARPAC manager taking a huge sum of money.
What led them to such crime, obviously, financial difficulty. However, some just wanted to get a better car....

People don't steal because of financial difficulty. The steal because they don't think they'll be caught.
That sounded more like scapegoating to me. A little CYA. 'And he did it while I was off serving the CNMI. This is the thanks I get.'

If the only reason people stole was because they thought they'd get away with it.. we'd have no street signs left. Most people steal because they see no quicker way to meet some financial end. People steal what they think they need.

Also, who said that $20,000 was stolen all at once? May have been taken $500 or $1000 at a time, wouldn't really take that long and definitely wouldn't be noticed as fast.
People steal for all sorts of reasons. A friend of mine back in the States found herself taking food from work (she is a cook) because she couldn't make ends meet enough to feed her kids.
She is a good person, and replaced what she took, but her employer probably would have fired her if they had ever found out. If they had prosecuted, she would then be known as someone with a criminal record, making it even harder to find a decent paying job.
Of course, some people steal because they are just too damn lazy to find work, or because they are simple sociopaths.

i heard from a reliable source who worked there until about 2 weeks before it was closed, that the problem with IMC was that the OWNER was consistantly taking money out of the account to pay for whatever--(he has kids in college, i think 2 or 3 in the states, bills etc) and so the blood and other specimens taken from NonResidents for their health certificates were not being processed because they didnt have the money to pay for the diagnostic fees. the blood was piling up in teh fridges to the point they were not being stored properly. now what will happen to those non residents... i dont know...
They should return their blood.

anyone watch tony glad's interview on the news last night? when asked about his accountant who fled to the philippines, he said, "IT'S TYPICAL OF FILIPINOS TO RUN AWAY FROM THEIR PROBLEMS."
i'm barely paraphrasing the south asian chap who has been residing in these parts for well over 2 decades, setting up and setting down a variety of businesses. (didn't he have his hand in real estate here?)
and the reporter glossed right by that comment, too. egad.
i suppose i'd overgeneralize too if i was left with yet another sunken business. damn the sneaky and cowardly ways of [insert ethnicity here].

Glad I never went to island medical center. Looked pretty ghetto to me. And my kababayans don't run from their problems.
Whoever blew the whistle on Island Medical Center should be commended.
That, or the Bureau of Environmental Health did what it's supposed to do -- to make sure every clinic on island complies with sanitation and other health standards. Maybe it's just a matter of time before we see IMC clients suing the clinic.
BEH's suspension order states that Island Medical Center has a history of “unlawful pattern or practice by issuing health certificates either without blood screening tests or on the basis of false, forged and/or altered lab test documentary results.” That's serious.
What's next, BEH?
Why would someone who's fleeing the CNMI rush through the airport? It won't make the plane leave any faster.
He wants to be seen by as few people as possible.
Running, however, is indeed counter-productive, as it calls attention to oneself, and could be considered circumstantial evidence of consciousness of guilt.
