A five-year term for Fitial?

There are talks about making the local elections coincide with elections in the states, Saipan Tribune reports today.

This means that, at some point--and that point could be soon--elected officials would either have their term in power cut short by one year or, more likely, get one bonus year in office.

Could we be in for two and a half more years of Ben and Tim?

Here's a better idea: A three-year term for Fitial.

A five-year term for Fitial? Is that before or after the plea bargain?

Wouldn't the legislators proposing an increase in their own terms have a conflict of interest?

No matter, the people will have the last word. Even if the proposed Constitutional Amendment passes 2/3 of each house of the Legislature, it will still need “50% plus one” approval from the voters.

Save money on election costs? We'd lose much more than that with these clowns in office.

What they should do is reduce the terms of those elected in 2009 by one year, to give the people slightly more opportunity to hold our public servants accountable during these troubled times.

I would have expected 10 to 12 years with a possible parole after 5 or 6 years.

We could do a lot worse. We could have one of the federalist weasels in office giving away the rest of the our autonomy and taking accolades from the 200 Fed Loving haoles hanging around here for their turn at running the show.

Loss of any "autonomy" is guided by allowances in the covenant, enacted after inept and corrupt management of immigration and the minimum wage, solely for the purpose of facilitating a cheap labor market.

Get a grip noni. Workers can't compete, minimum wages have been kept artificially low, local workers have been kept out of the workforce, boatloads of workers were brought in for the garment industry, in many cases they worked under bad conditions, many were shafted paywise, many were abandoned, yada yada yada.

Things were just great weren't they? You and those who subscribe to your line of thinking, are the same folks that have us in the situation we're in right now. Backwards, backwoods, xenophobe nitwits, who can't tell their ass from their nose. Wake up.. your schemes failed. You screwed workers, you screwed residents, you screwed proper development, and you screwed the good name of the Marianas.

Yay to what Lil just said.

I just don't get why anyone (our elected leaders, for example) would strive so hard to become a Third World entity.

An extended term for this bunch? God forbid.........

20 to life allowing the Gov to get out in 2028 for good behavior provided he fully cooperates.

People, People, People, Why say those words and waist your time writing such harshed words about our CNMI Governor! He will win you watch you have to learn true politics in the Marianas. If not then go ahead and see that we will prevail....Stop the nonsense and just say that he is doing a great job after all....biba Covenant Party again....
