Do We Ever Learn....

Drunk Driving...Claims another....

At 11pm last night the road going to Susupe right before the Gilbert C. Ada Gym was almost blocked by the traffic police due to another car accident. A car went through a concrete fence across the Mobil Gas Station.

Friends were caught up in the traffic last night. We learned today that the victims were Koreans --Husband and wife. Allegedly, the man was drunk and was the driver while the wife was his passenger. Sources said the wife died from the accident. On the spot? We don't know.

People say that it's sad to lose a wife and be charged of murder in the end after his recovery....

What is the penalty for vehicular manslaughter?

CNMI law, depends who you are, who your uncle is and so forth. A Korean businessman who is connected will probably get no jailtime, just a fine and maybe a temporary house arrest.

It might help if sobriety check points were done when the bars close (when most drunk driving takes place)instead of early in the evening; AND judges gave standard stiff penalties AND the legislature passed a tavern owners liability bill AND local juries made appropriate findings and verdicts. Is it possible that DPS, the Judges and the citizens would all do their jobs???

We should lower speed limits, begin public transportation on Beach, Middle, and Cross County Rds, and get tougher on speeding and druck driving.

All of these actions would give Saipan more charm, character, and appeal to tourists in a more competative market, while making our island safer for residents and our children.

It probably wouldn't hurt either if everyone had to actually earn a driver's license rather than just purchasing one.

We have public transportation...the $3 taxis.

That is a good point steeleman and yes, 3 buck cabs are sort of public transportation...doomed under federalization I fear.

Earn a drivers' license? Blasphemer!

I am in a major American city right now and I took a taxi from the airport to my hotel. The airport charged the taxi $1.75, the cost of which was passed down to me. Our airport charges $5. That's not right.

We should have cheap, safe taxi on services on Saipan. Right now we have cheap and safe, pick one.

Lower the speed limit? Where the hell do you live? Drive down Beach Road any time of the day and enjoy your 30 mph cruise.

The speed limit has nothing to do with idiots driving drunk or recklessly.

Two points:

1. The $3 taxis and the purchased driver's licenses are both inevitable responses to a situation where going through the official system is unreasonably burdensome.

2. Nobody wants to hear this, because we are so accustomed to thinking of our paved roads as "progress," but wasn't it really better when the roads were too rough to go fast enough to hurt anybody?
