Pawn Da Replay

My friend and I were scouring the pawnshops on Saipan for a great deal on some digital cameras my friend needs, when we saw this TV set being sold there. Notice the stickers on top of the monitor frame?

It says DLNR-DFW. Hmmm...our nasty thoughts played once again...

Did you call the police? Or the Head of DLNR?

oh i guess it's just a sticker but i don't think it's a real deal...sorry lil...didn't see my laptop either ;-)

You should call the police and report what you saw. Show them the pictures. They can investigate to find out if its the real deal or not. If it is, they can finally arrest some of the theives out there (hopefully before they ever reach my house :).

Rev, please call the police and report it. You can do it anonymously. Pawnshops that receive stolen goods should be held accountable to some extent if they didn't get the seller's proper identification. The police should be able to get the name of the seller and if it is indeed government property, that person should be put behind bars. Some pawnshops are often just as bad as the recycling centers who receive stolen copper.

ISLAS DE LOS LADRONES. This is only the beginning. As the CNMI economy tanks even further, we will see everything from Gov't supplies to baby's clothes wind up in pawn shops. Rumor has it the Gov't will be laying off hundreds more including PSS and NMC. It will also get much more dangerous.

When economies plunder crime obviously increases. I don't agree with the doomsday predictions. If anything, I think there are some indicators that things are getting better.

Perhaps we could all learn from P.I.C. They have had their best year ever, in spite of our poor economy. Why? Intelligent and aggressive marketing and a great product to sell. They were at 117% occupancy rate when other hotels were operating in their 70's.

Anonymous said...

how do you have 117% occupancy? Are they renting some rooms by the hour?

One hotel at 100% is hardly an indicating factor for the economy. Everyday, a business goes under. The Gov't is operating in the red (a loss) and this will only get worse. The retirement fund will be bankrupt within 5-8 years, this will happen. The Gov't does not put any money into the pot for the thousands of Gov't people who will be retiring. Gov't vendors don't get paid anymore. On the positive side, when things really hit rock bottom (sometime in 09)the CNMI will be forced to do something for the economy.

yup, you SHOULD report this if you haven't already. the pawn shop should DEFINITELY be held accountable for accepting what looks like stolen property.

how do you get 117% at PIC? 17% of the guests sleep at the beach or bunk with the clubmates.

Are the thieves so stupid they don't even think to remove the label?

but what if its just a sticker and the tv set was owned by an employee from DLNR-DFW? oh well...will call them tomorrow...

You do know that the discount camera you might have found, would quite likely be stolen from a tourist or even from a robbery similar to your own theft incident. Boycott the pawn shops, you are just giving the thieves an easier place to fence their booty.. Find someone heading to Guam, who you can trust, like most everyone else.

It is a sad state of affairs, but I never liked pawn shops at the best of times, You're purchasing someone else's shame, inoportune purchase, or at worst, acting as a receiver of stolen goods.

With flights arriving at 2:00 a.m. and departing at 3:00 a.m., occupancy levels over 100% are not that hard to understand.

Some people pay for a full night, but check out at 1:00 a.m. Other folks check in at 3:00 a.m. the same day.

Thus, two people have paid for the same room for a day.

afficionado,

That was well put, most people do not know that. Also, you now see tourists shopping at Joeten for food, that is a sign of a thrifty tourist on a very tight budget, another bad sign.

sox,

im an ebay addict. but it was interesting to visit pawnshops with all those "actually not-cheap" stuff found there. i can't believe they would price some of those items so far out!

don't these pawnshops check the actual price of these items now?

i should've done that visit a long time ago when our stuff was stolen...but then again...someone else's loss, is someone else's gain...

Tamara said...

Any update? Where these items found to be stollen or were they legit? Inquiring minds want to know...

CNMI Gov't workers see the writing on the wall. The Gov't is about to downsize, big time. They have to. We will see many more incidents like this, but they will dramatically increase. Copper wire will be stripped out of Gov't offices, WW2 relics will be sold, etc. These people have no skills to make it in the private sector, no will to work long hours, it's sad. What really is insane is the Gov't lawmakers will be the last one's cut. This has been the MO here since it began, and will be until the Gov't goes to a complete part time legislature.

Tamara, i informed DFW already and they said they'd send staff to look at it...

Anonymous said...

The DFW 'staff' are the one's who sold the monitors in the first place..LOL

things are rough, but I doubt very much that we will get close to the 216 gang-related deaths in Los Angeles in 2007..
