Hold Up!

Did you hear about this news two months ago and just recently about a tourist bus that was hijacked by some men on the island and held up some tourists? Our sources said that the tourists were in utter shock to have been robbed inside the bus. The sources also mentioned that one tourist bus that took the back road route was also held up by armed men and took each tourists valuables.

Isn't this the saddest news ever? Oh well...

This is some serious shit. If true, why wasn't it in the newspapers? Did I miss the articles?

i know. but i know how it works in the paper. it is possible that the tour agent or company wouldn't want this to be published due to marketing reasons or reputation of the company....

email me a lead and i'll track it down. i don't buy it, though. dps would definitely make a fuss about it. i chalk this up to rumor...

It's hard to believe, but than again, I can tell you that I had first hand information a number of years ago about a couple of serious tourist related incidents. I won't say which or I may reveal myself, but they were serious and the information was purposely kept on the down low. The respective tour company knew, the MVA knew, but the general public never found out.

So, I wouldn't say that it is not possible. I will say that if news reporters have wind of such a story, they should investigate it to no end.

indeed. hopefully, some of them would read this....

If this incident really happened, this would be the straw that breaks the boonie dog's back for Saipan's economy. The ONLY reason Saipan sets itself apart from let's say Bali, is safety. No terrorist bombings (not yet anyway) and no hold'em gangs like the PI.

true.

The crooks were caught very quickly, the cops had over 3oo digital images of them.....lol

Whether it is true or not, it is apparent that burglars and thieves are becoming more bold and daring, and perhaps desperate.

You can be sure that any of our tourists robbed will tell all their friends, who will tell their friends, etc.

What can MVA and DPS do to ensure safety besides educating our tourists? I feel stiffer sentences could be one place to start.

You're right Ed. There is an alarming problem however. Thieves are physically assaulting their victims after they rob them. This is a very dangerous trend. Most purse snatchers just leave after they rob, but lately they assault their victims. A tourist was hit several times by a stun gun, even tortured. This is very, very bad.
