Good. The Babauta administration was just too corrupt, and people do not forget who got us into the sorry situation we currently find ourselves.

The low turnout is very interesting, similar to their vote totals in the 2005 general election.

I do feel sorry for Galvin, who has sullied his previously excellent reputation by further association with Juan Nekai Babauta. Eventually the people may forget about that.

As for Juan, he can resume his jogging and excellent care of his body, and continue to draw on the NMIRF retirement benefits whose current stability he has contributed so much to.

Oops!

Maybe he will be forced by financial concerns to run for Delegate in 2010.

“Doe Defendants” are a creature of California law expressly authorized by that state. What is the authority for suing them in the CNMI?

Are Ben Tan, Heinz, and Juan Pan to be named as “Doe Defendants” in the federal lawsuit against the NMIRF and CNMI, or will Jorgie play favorites?

Someone should look up the Garment Factories' successful motions to disclose the identity of the Plaintiffs in that long-running case.

The idea that the NMIRF and CNMI would “retaliate” because someone has noticed the Fund is running out of money is ludicrous.

And there are well over 100 legislators, NMIRF trustees, and governors who have gotten the NMIRF into this mess since it was established.

Don't forget the Estate of Jesus P. Mafnas.

Juan pan for governer???? so he can run the CNMI the way he runs Herman's bakery, or his security guard companies or his contract nurses defunct business? that would be great - the CNMI could pay his sons $40,000 annually to bring in contract nurses and then they could pay the nurses $4.55 per hour just like their dera old dad did until Babauta said no more. Yeah, he's got no political experience but lots and lots of corruption experience and poor business experience.

criticizing ed's positions on our local issues is one thing, but before you start bagging on his magazine, perhaps you should read this from theodore roosevelt.

i think the magazine put ed into the arena. he tried and it didn't work out.

if he's so interested, i hope he can revive mp magazine one day. at the time, it was much better than anything published locally.

I don't think many people dis Ed for his entrepreneurial effort. It is the initiative displayed by small business people that make America what it is.

It was his frequent, vicious, rude personal attacks of individuals public and private that rubbed many the wrong way.

People do not forget things like that, especially on a small island where everyone knows everyone else.

The caricatures of people you read about in the Saipan press (and blogosphere) have little correlation with what they are actually like in real life. Including Ed.

The anonymous critic was pretty accurate about some of my harsh letters. To those I have offended, I apologize. I'm not going to bring change by bulldozing over people or by attacking individuals rather than issues.

Did Heinz or anyone get me my job with PSS? No. I think my college degree and experience got me my job and my political views were put aside, the way it should be. And for the record, my salary is one hundred percent federally funded in case you are worried about me being a political hire.

Criticize me. Judge me. Say what you please. I dished it out and can certainly take it. But make no mistake about it. I will not back down on the positions that I believe in. But if I lack humility and the ability to see other views and fail to listen to others and if I interrupt others rather than letting them finish what they have to say, then I am ineffective in trying to bring real change. The real change that I have so often preached about does not happen on Capital Hill. It comes from within. And yes, I am slowly realizing that through self-reflection and from listening to some older, wiser people, one of them who happens to be my father.

But at least one frequent commenter there delights in “outing” the putative author of posts with whom he disagrees (with about 75% accuracy) in almost every comment, addressing whole diatribes to his presumed interlocutor. Such persistent, aggressive, and uncivil behavior is symptomatic of the low level of public discourse in the CNMI and lack of respect for persons of differing ideological orientations or political affiliations than one's own.

As for Edwin, there is no contradiction between his blog policy and comments on this thread.

The rejected attacks are juvenile, scatalogical puns on his surname, his physical characteristics, his family, etc. He does not censor debate about issues or even actions he has taken.

People here have a lot to learn about respect for others, including refraining from personal attacks (such as intentionally mangled surnames), and not attributing unattributed comments.

The focus should be on issues. Otherwise the conversation will simply dry up.

Things would be a lot better if SMR and Wendy would enforce such basic courtesy by deleting posts, and explaining why they did so. Or we could learn a little self-discipline.

Learning to say “no” is important, even if it makes one unpopular -- as the parents of the two-year-old allergic to apple juice found out.

I have read Wendy's Blog and many others. It appears that when you can not defend what you say you scurry away, claiming that the person you are debating with is attacking you personally. I have read the comments that have been posted and although they may mention your many nicknames they always focus specifically on the topic at hand. Most of the time simply taking what you have said and poking holes through it.

The only person I have seen attack people based on the individual and not what they have said is you. When you have no defense you throw out names of who you think it is that is commenting and you attack the person rather than the issue or the arguments.

Try and read back through Wendy's site or others like it (this included). You, Mr. B, are the one that personally attacks people (BTW, this is not a personal attack that is off subject it is my opinion on the issue at hand. The issue you have just made a comment about).

Wendy is actually pretty good at promoting mutual respect, fostering civility, and removing comments such as those in the first paragraph of the post at 4:32 PM above, if one takes the time (which most of us don't) to contact her.

However, such individuals find it hard to understand they are doing anything wrong, as proven above. “Mentioning” a presumed author generally has nothing to do with an issue at hand. “Scurrying away” is often a direct consequence of the “winning” poster's diversion of the subject, resulting in an incomplete conversation.

Its sort of a more juvenile version of the “win at all costs” blog debate style that Edwin has wisely backed away from but our anonymous “Outer” seem to think is how he “wins.”

BTW, g00$e, I'd be interested in talking some day about what it was like as a civilian in Vietnam.

I do welcome criticism of me, as I stated earlier. But I think innocent children, anyone's children for that matter, are not fair game. A series of attacks against my children was just too much. Let's keep family out of it and stick to the issues.

I noticed some civility has been restored in the Marianas Variety online commentary once they put up a disclaimer and started moderating comments. It was the right thing to do.

Word on the street is the Covenant Party is trying to find which voters voted in the Republican Primary. Government workers with contracts up for renewal that voted in the primary...may find their contracts will not be renewed. Just hearsay at the moment, but interesting nontheless.

Juan Pan just blew many potential votes today (7/08/09) Check out the latest news on the Retirement Fund fiasco. Gov contract workers that will not have their contracts renewed are totally fucked as far as withdrawing their duly paid retirement contributuions and moving on. Some say Heinz has an interesting plan to save the Fund, If so, let's hear it! Meanwhile clowns like Bill Stewert can continue to keep drawing more than they ever put into the Fund.
Life sucks then you get fucked.

Hello. My wife and I bought our house about 6 months ago. It was a foreclosure and we were able to get a great deal on it. We also took advantage of the 8K tax credit so that definitely helped. We did an extensive remodeling job and now I want to refinance to cut the term to a 20 or 15 year loan. Does anyone know any good sites for mortgage information? Thanks!
