Kings of My Papaya

Isn't it great to wake up in the morning and be greeted by these birds perching by our yard on one of our papaya trees at home? Are these king fishers? These birds never fail to perch on this tree every morning. I just sit on the couch and watch them frolic on the tree.

'Wish I took my Wildlife 101 course in college seriously.

How many birds species does Saipan have? Oh well...

Nice pics! Kingfishers are my favorite birds... they see the floundering squawking little prey and they attack. They may get a little peep or two out of their prey... but it was really all over with the first attack.

I have a BB gun if those birds are bothering you. Stanley Torres gave it to me. Said it was a gift from Damien.

Older Chamorros believe that those birds can tell time...kind of like how crickets can measure temperature.

Half hour birds, or sometimes quarter hour birds depending on who you hear the stories from. They supposedly call on the stroke of the quarter hour or half hour.

I've tested this theory on the golf course but was not quite drunk enough to confirm quarter hour compliance.
